When your accounting or tax professional asks you to upload documents, you’ll receive a SmartVault Document Request.
This article walks you through how to open the request, upload your files, and submit them securely — whether you’re on a computer or mobile device.
Important
- Your accounting or tax professional can send you requests for specific engagements (for example, Tax, Accounting, or Project work)
- You’ll only see Doc Requests options in your SmartVault portal if a request has been sent to you.
- Doc Requests do not include document signing. If you’re asked to sign a document, contact the person who sent you the request.
Responding to Document Requests
You'll be asked to upload specific documents—such as W-2s, bank statements, or receipts.
From the email invitation
- Open the email invitation and click the secure link.
- If you’re not signed in to SmartVault, you’ll be prompted to log in. Once signed in, you’ll be taken directly to your request.
- Depending on your device:

On a mobile device: Each requested document includes two options:
- Take a Photo — use your mobile camera to capture and upload an image of your document using SmartScan.
- Select a File — browse your device to upload an existing file.

On a computer: Click Upload a file or drag and drop the document into the upload area.

- If a document isn’t relevant, select This does not apply.
- Add a comment if there’s something your accounting or tax professional should know.
- When finished, click Submit to securely send your files.
From the SmartVault Portal

In SmartVault, select Doc Requests from the left-hand navigation bar, or click View & Respond to Requests in the “Document Requests Pending” box.
Note
These options appear only if you have pending document requests.
- The Doc Requests page lists all document requests that have been sent to you.
- Click a request to open it and start uploading your documents.
- Follow the same upload steps described above (based on your device).
- When you've finished uploading all the requested files, click Submit to complete the request.
Note
You can return to Doc Requests at any time to upload missing files or review submitted requests.
Tracking Your Requests
You can check the status of your requests from the Doc Requests page in your SmartVault portal.
Each request updates automatically as you complete and submit it:
- Submitted — You’ve finished and submitted your response.
- Completed — Your accounting or tax professional has reviewed and marked the request as done.
Tip
To review previous or completed requests, go to the Doc Requests page and select Show Completed at the top. Completed requests appear at the bottom of your list and can be opened to view your submitted files and comments.
