Debugging Browser Extension Logs

When you need to troubleshoot issues with the SmartVault toolbar in QuickBooks Online, collecting debug logs from the browser extension helps our support team diagnose problems faster. Follow the steps below to turn on verbose logging and capture the console output in Chrome or Edge.

Enabling Verbose Logging

  1. In your browser toolbar, click the SmartVault extension icon.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Check Turn on verbose logging

  Tip

Keep your QuickBooks Online open in another tab so the extension can log its activity as you work.

Capturing Logs in Chrome

  1. Open chrome://extensions/ in a new tab.
  2. Toggle Developer mode on (top right).
  3. Under the SmartVault extension, click Inspect views > background.html.
  4. In the new DevTools window, switch to the Console panel (click the "Console" icon at the top).
  5. Click the Clear console button (⦸) to start fresh.
  6. Switch back to the QBO tab and perform the actions you want to log (e.g., opening transactions, attaching documents).
  7. Return to the Console panel; you'll see the log entries populate.
  8. Select all text in the Console (Ctrl A), copy (Ctrl C), and paste into a text file for sharing.

Capturing Logs in MS Edge

  1. Open Edge's Extensions page: click the puzzle-piece icon ► Manage extensions.
  2. Toggle Developer mode on (bottom left).
  3. Under SmartVault, click Inspect views > service worker.
  4. In the new DevTools window, go to the Console tab.
  5. Click the Clear console button (⦸) to remove old entries.
  6. Perform your test actions in QuickBooks Online.
  7. Switch back to the Console, select all text, copy, and save it into a text file.

Saving and Sharing Your Logs

  1. Name your file SV-Logs_<browser>_<date>.txt (e.g., SV-Logs_Chrome_20250714.txt).
  2. Attach the file to your support ticket or email reply.
  3. Include a brief note describing the steps you took before the logs were recorded.
