Locking Files in Connected Desktop

GENERAL USER

When you open a file in Connected Desktop, it’s automatically locked so only you can edit it. Other users will see a lock icon and receive a message if they try to open the file. Once you close the file, it unlocks, allowing others to work on it.

How Locking Works

  • Automatic Lock: Opening a file locks it—no extra steps are needed.
  • Visual Cue: A lock icon replaces the file type icon while the file is open.
  • Auto-Unlock: Closing the file releases the lock immediately.
  • Maximum Lock Time: If left open, a file remains locked for up to seven days before unlocking automatically.

Handling Locked Files

  • If Someone Else Has It Open
    • They'll see a file locked message.

    • They can retry when you close the file.
  • Access from Other Devices
    • While a file is locked on one computer, it stays locked on any other device (phone, tablet, or another PC)

  Note

If you walk away with a file open, it stays locked for up to seven days before unlocking itself. Be sure to close files when you finish so your team can continue working.
