Resolving the "Access to Path is Denied QuickBooks" Error


When restoring a QuickBooks company file backup using the Restore QuickBooks Data functionality, you may get the following error:

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'C:\Users\~ .QBW.DSN' is denied. 

This error indicates that either someone else is currently accessing it, or you do not have the correct permissions to access it.

Resolving this Error

  1. Ensure QuickBooks is completely closed.


    QuickBooks company files cannot be open when attempting to restore a company file backup.

  2. From QuickBooks, select File > Exit.
  3. Open the Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  4. Select Processes.
  5. Check for QBW32.exe.
  6. If it is running, select it and click End process

This should resolve the issue. In rare cases, a reboot may be necessary.
