ACCOUNTING PLAN USER
When a couple who previously filed jointly in ProSeries divorces, it is essential to create completely separate client records to ensure tax documents are correctly routed and stored in SmartVault. Splitting or retaining any information from the former vault will cause the records to remain intertwined, leading to potential errors.
This guide explains the correct steps for managing client records after a divorce.
Creating a New Client in ProSeries for the Divorced Spouse
- Decide Which Client Record to Keep
- Keep the original joint client file for one spouse (e.g., John Smith).
- You must create a new client profile for the second spouse (e.g., Jane Smith) to ensure their tax data is independent.
- Create a new client profile in ProSeries for the second spouse (e.g., Jane Smith).
- Create a New Client Profile in ProSeries
- In ProSeries, follow the standard method to create a new client profile for the second spouse (e.g., Jane Smith).
- Enter only the new client’s name (e.g., Jane Smith).
- Do not enter any additional information at this stage.
- This ensures that ProSeries and SmartVault do not attempt to link the new client to the previous joint return.
- Save the new client profile.
Why is this important?
Creating the new client with only their name prevents ProSeries or SmartVault from incorrectly associating them with the previous joint return. You will enter all tax data later and re-import the client to SmartVault.
- Import the New Client into SmartVault
- Open the SmartVault Launchpad.
- Click Import Data.
- Select the Source to Import: "Intuit ProSeries TY" and click Next.
- Select the Type of client to import and click Next.
- Select the new client record to import (e.g., Jane Smith).
- Click Finish and then Exit.
- Enter the Tax Data for the New Client
- After the new client is successfully imported into SmartVault, return to ProSeries.
- Enter all necessary tax information into the new client profile.
- Once the tax data is entered, re-import the client into SmartVault to link all tax documents properly.
Important
Do not attempt to split the joint return, as this may result in SmartVault misrouting the tax documents.
