Client ID
The unique ID associated with one of your clients. This is imported from your client record in Lacerte or ProSeries.
Client ID is one of the column names in the Client List pane, and the Search Bar can filter your Client List by values stored in this column.
Client filter
This tool is located in the View menu and filters your Client List by tax type.
Client list
The Client List is a collection of all your clients, either imported from Lacerte or ProSeries or manually created in SmartVault. Click a client in the Client List pane to view the client vault in the Document View pane.
Client List pane
The pane located on the left side of the Connected Desktop main window. This pane displays your Client List and the Search Bar.
Copy
The operation used to make an additional copy of a file in a different location. You can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+C.
Cut
The operation used to move a file to a new location. The file is deleted from the original location when pasted. You can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+X.
Drag and Drop
An easy way to move files or folders from your computer to Connected Desktop and vice versa. Click on a file or folder and do not release the mouse button, and you move the file or folder across the screen to its destination.
Document View Find tool
A local search performed on only the files and folders located within a client vault and not performed on all files and folders within your entire account.
Document View pane
The Document View pane displays all files and folders contained in a client vault and is the main pane you will use to work on documents within Connected Desktop.
Click on a client in the Client List pane to view the client vault in the Document View pane.
Document View toolbar
The Document View toolbar is located at the top of the Document View pane and holds all of the standard tools used to perform viewing, editing, and other operations on documents in a client vault.
Expand All menu
The Expand All menu allows you to control how folders are expanded and collapsed. Options include Expand All, Collapse All, and Expand By Year, which expands folders for the current and previous tax years.
Global Find tool
The Global Find tool is a search used to locate any file or folder within your account. Since it searches all files and folders, it takes longer than the local find tool in the Document View pane.
The Global Find tool is located in the Edit menu and should only be used when you are unsure of the client vault in which the file or folder is stored.
Local cache
The files stored on your computer as you open files and folders from Connected Desktop. The local cache clears automatically every 30 minutes.
Paste
The operation used to complete a copy and paste action or cut and paste action. You can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+V.
PDF Editor
The PDF editor and the Scan Documents tool share the same interface. You can view, rotate, reorder, add, and delete PDF pages from the Connected Desktop from this window.
Refresh
This term refers to a refresh of the Client List (CTRL+F5 while Client List pane is active) or a refresh of files in a client vault (F5 while the Document View pane is active).
Refresh updates any clients or files and folders added to your SmartVault account by other users or clients as you work in Connected Desktop.
Search Bar
The search bar acts as a filter to quickly locate a client based on client name, ID, or tax type.
Send To menu
The Send To menu is used to get files from SmartVault to your computer or other people by utilizing Connected Desktop. It sends a link to files via email or downloads a file to your computer, for example.
Tax Engagement
A tax engagement describes the folder structure created for a client by tax year. Common folders include Tax Returns, Source Documents, Tax Plan Reports, and various client-accessible folders.
Tax Type
A value assigned to your client that indicates what kind of tax entity this client falls under.
Tax Type is one of the column names in the Client List pane and the search bar can filter your Client List by values stored in this column.
