Your accounting or tax professional may send you a SmartRequest—an online questionnaire used to collect information and supporting documents for your engagement.
SmartRequests may include prefilled answers from your prior-year return, making it easier to review, update, and upload what’s needed.

Accessing the Questionnaire
From the email invitation
- Open the email invitation and click the secure link.
- If you’re not signed in to SmartVault, you’ll be prompted to log in.
- Once signed in, you’ll be taken directly to your SmartRequest landing page.
From the SmartVault Portal

In SmartVault, select Doc Requests from the left-hand navigation bar, or click View & Respond to Requests in the Document Requests Pending box.
Note
These options appear only if you have pending SmartRequests or document requests.
- The Doc Requests page lists all requests sent to you.
- Click a request to open it.
Completing the Questionnaire
- Click a request to open it, then select Enter questionnaire to begin.
- Review each section and update information as needed.
- Sections include Basic Info, Income, and Deductions.
- Use Next to move through each page of the questionnaire.
Uploading Documents
When a document is requested, upload it directly within the questionnaire.
On a mobile device:
- Take a Photo — Use your mobile camera with SmartScan to capture and upload a document.
- Select a File — Upload an existing file from your device.
On a computer:
- Click Upload a file or,
- Drag and drop the file into the upload area.
When available, you can also add comments or mark an item as This does not apply.
Saving and Submitting
- Click Save & Close at any time to save your progress and continue later.
- After completing all sections, return to the main SmartRequest page.
- Review your files in the Uploaded Documents section.
Once submitted:
- The request status updates to Submitted.
- Your accounting or tax professional is notified.
Tracking Your Requests
You can check the status of your requests from the Doc Requests page in your SmartVault portal.
Each request updates automatically as you complete and submit it:
- Submitted — You’ve finished and submitted your response.
- Completed — Your accounting or tax professional has reviewed and marked the request as done.
Tip
To review previous or completed requests, go to the Doc Requests page and select Show Completed at the top. Completed requests appear at the bottom of your list and can be opened to view your submitted files and comments.
