Tag Documents Manually in the Online Portal
Firm users can now manually assign document tags, such as Client Copy of Tax Return, directly from a file’s properties panel in the online portal.
This is especially important for SmartRequestAI. SRAI looks for a document tagged as Client Copy in order to extract the correct 1040. If the correct tag is not applied, or if the tag on the file does not match the folder’s tag, SmartRequestAI will not recognize the document for processing.
This update allows firms to:
- Correctly tag existing 1040s without reprinting them into SmartVault
- Ensure SmartRequestAI pulls the intended tax return
- Improve accuracy in Bulk Send workflows when tagged returns are required
Note
For SmartRequestAI and other automated workflows to recognize a document, the tag applied to the file must match a tag configured in that folder's folder template. Updating a file’s tag will also update its modified date.

What was updated?
SmartRequestAI Now Uses the Most Recently Modified 1040
When multiple documents are tagged as Client Copy of Tax Return, SmartRequestAI will now select the most recently modified version instead of the earliest created version.
This update ensures the correct and most up-to-date tax return is used during SmartRequest processing, especially for firms using Intuit tax software (Lacerte, ProSeries, and ProConnect Tax Online) or SmartRouting with CCH Axcess and UltraTax.
What was fixed?
Error When Deleting Linked Clients
Firms can now successfully delete linked clients without encountering the “Object reference not set to an instance of an object” error.
Issue with Editing or Removing Assigned Employees
Resolved an issue where firms were unable to edit roles or remove employees assigned to a client. Assigned Employee management now works as expected, including updating roles and deleting assignments.
