A few clicks here, a few clicks there... it all adds up. This release makes three everyday workflows a little smoother.
Tired of digging through folders to fix a document's name after the fact? In the SmartRequestAI workflow, you can now rename a client's questionnaire attachment right from the review screen. Plus, documents uploaded through SmartScan or the portal can now be renamed at the time of upload.
Having to open a client's details in edit mode just to see whether they're opted out of Automated Reminders? That status is now visible right on the Client Details page, no edit mode required.
We've also made an improvement to the Connected Desktop, making it easier to navigate the tax year folders that matter most throughout the filing season.

Keep documents organized from the start
How?
You can now correct a document's file name the moment it comes in, instead of tracking it down afterward. The experience varies slightly depending on the workflow, whether it’s a client submission in SmartScan, a firm's review of documents attached to the SmartRequestAI questionnaire, or an upload through the portal.
The Benefit to Your Firm: Generic file names slow reviewers down and make documents harder to find later. Catching it early means no one has to circle back and clean it up.
In the SmartRequestAI Workflow
Client uploads used to keep whatever name they arrived with, and fixing that meant opening each document's individual folder. See how it works now:

Select Review Questionnaire
- Client uploads still arrive under whatever name they already had, whatever that happens to be.
- Previously, giving a document a clearer name meant leaving the questionnaire to open its individual folder.
- Now, you can rename it right from the questionnaire, without leaving the review screen.
- The new name takes effect immediately, everywhere that document appears in the workflow.
SmartScan and Portal Uploads
Previously, a document couldn't be renamed at the time it was scanned or uploaded. SmartScan assigned a system-generated name automatically, whether the upload came from a client or a firm user. A desktop upload retained whatever name the file had been saved under locally. See how it works now:
- A document is scanned with SmartScan or uploaded from a desktop, by a client or a firm user.
- Select the pencil icon to rename the document.
- Type in the new name of the document and select the checkmark icon.
- Select Save to upload the document with the new name.
Key Capabilities
- Rename from the Questionnaire: Firm reviewers can rename any client-submitted document directly within the questionnaire view, without opening individual folders. Clients can also rename any document at the time they upload it into the questionnaire.
- Rename at Upload: Documents can be renamed at the time they're scanned or uploaded, whether through SmartScan or from a desktop.
Automated Reminders: Opt-Out Visibility
The Benefit to Your Firm: Staff no longer need to enter edit mode just to check a client's reminder preferences, the answer is right there on the page they're already viewing.
- Previously, the read-only Client Details page gave no indication of a client's reminder opt-out status.
- The status was only visible when editing the page.
- Now, an opt-out indicator appears directly on Client Details for any client who has opted out, with no need to enter edit mode. Clients who are opted in, the default, will have no indicator.
Navigate tax year folders faster in the Connected Desktop
The Benefit to Your Firm: Folders now expand based on when your firm actually needs them, so staff spend less time manually opening the right tax year during filing season.
In our last update to the Connected Desktop, we limited the auto-expand folders feature to only expand the current calendar year and the previous calendar year, to reduce long load times for firms with a larger number of clients. However, filing season timing varies from firm to firm, and this approach didn't account for that variation.
Now, the auto-expand folders feature uses a November 1st cutoff, aligned with when firms send out organizers. Before November 1st, the two previous tax years are expanded. After November 1st, that shifts to the current tax year and the previous one.
- As shown here, the Connected Desktop previously auto-expanded the 2025 and 2026 tax year folders, since those were the current and previous calendar years.
- As shown here, only the 2024 and 2025 tax year folders auto-expand instead, since it's before the November 1st cutoff.
Other tax year folders stay in the folder list, just collapsed. And if a client is missing the relevant tax year folders, the auto-expand folders feature falls back to the two most recently available years.
