When you try to update SmartVault, you might see:
System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Unknown error (0xffffffff)
This usually happens if SmartVault is still running during the update, or a previous update didn't complete. To resolve the issue, uninstall the current version, ensure that no SmartVault processes are active, and then reinstall the latest desktop client.
How to Resolve this Error

Close SmartVault and QuickBooks
- Exit the SmartVault Desktop app completely. Right-click the SmartVault icon in your system tray and select Exit.
- Close QuickBooks if it's running.

Verify No SmartVault Processes Are Running
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.
- If you see any SmartVault processes, select each one and click End Task.

Uninstall SmartVault
- Open Control Panel (search for it in the Start menu).
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select SmartVault in the list.
- Right-click on it and select Uninstall.
- Follow the instructions in the uninstaller.

Reboot Your Computer
- Restarting ensures any leftover files or processes are cleared.

Reinstall SmartVault
- Open your web browser and go to www.smartvault.com.
- Click Login, enter your credentials, and sign in.
- In the Actions pane, click Install desktop app.
- Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Sign In and Confirm
- Launch the SmartVault Launchpad from your desktop.
- Enter your credentials if prompted.
- Verify that the update is successful and that no errors occur.
