ADMIN USER
When you use Restore QuickBooks Data to bring a company file backup into SmartVault, you might see:
System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'C:\Users\~ .QBW.DSN' is denied. This error means SmartVault can’t reach the file because either QuickBooks is still running or your Windows user account lacks permission. Follow the steps below to clear the error and complete your restore.
Before You Begin
- Close QuickBooks completely. Any open company file locks all related ".QBW" extensions.
- Make sure you’re an administrator on your Windows machine or have sufficient folder permissions.
How To Resolve This Error
-
Exit QuickBooks
- In QuickBooks, go to File > Exit.
- Wait a few seconds for the program to close fully.
-
Kill Lingering QuickBooks Processes
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and choose Task Manager.
- Click the Processes tab.
- Look for QBW32.exe (or any QuickBooks-named process).
- If found, select it and click End task.
-
Retry to Restore
- Return to SmartVault and run Restore QuickBooks Data again.
- If the path permission was the only blocker, your restore should now start.
-
Reboot your Computer
- Sometimes a simple restart clears stubborn file locks or permission issues.
