Acting as the Taxpayer in SmartRequests

ACCOUNTING PLAN USER

Firm users can review, update, and complete a SmartRequest on behalf of a taxpayer when needed. This workflow is useful when a client hasn’t started the questionnaire, needs assistance, or when the firm prefers to complete the request internally.

By acting as the taxpayer, you can enter responses, upload documents, and decide whether the request can be completed or needs to be sent back to the client for further input.

When You Can Act as the Taxpayer

You can act as the taxpayer when a SmartRequest is in the following states:

  • Sent
  • Active
  • Completed (after reopening the request)

Act as the Taxpayer (Sent or Active SmartRequests)

  1. Sign in to the SmartVault Portal.
  2. Go to Doc Requests and select the SmartRequests tab.
  3. Locate the SmartRequest you want to review.
  4. Click More Actions Actions icon.png next to the SmartRequest, then select Review.
  5. Click Review Questionnaire.

From the questionnaire:

  • Review each section and update responses as needed.
  • Sections include Basic Info, Income, Deductions, and Other (when applicable).
  • Use Next to move through each page.
  • Upload documents on behalf of the taxpayer, if required.

Click Save & Close at any time to save your progress and return later.

What to Do Next

After reviewing or updating the questionnaire:

  • If no further client input is required
    • Click More Actions Actions icon.png, then select Mark as Complete.
    • Optionally select Generate Workpaper to create the workpaper PDFs.
  • If client input is still required, you can send it back for completion

      Information

The client receives an email with your message and a link that opens the SmartRequest directly so they can update it.
